The portrait is of a Taiwanese musician, Jay Chou, who inspired Hong Yi with one of his songs. The song is called “Secret” and it tells a tale of heartbreak about a lost romance with a time-traveling girl from 1979. The portrait was done using coffee cup stains. It is formed by many individual rings, many of them broken and imperfect.
Using coffee as a medium, Hong Yi discovered that it does have its complexities as a medium — if the coffee is too concentrated, it was too dark and hard to manipulate, but when too weak, the rings would not form at all.
